Top: The Romsdal pilothouse is original, with space for guests, a pilot's berth, and a desk for navagation and radio work. Above left: Cozy, compact, and comfortable, the saloon is a quiet place for relaxing, reading or watching videos. Above right: Originally, a stairway rose from the galley to the piothouse above. To create a workable, home-style kitchen, ower Bill Lee moved the stairs. In a previous life, the stool bases supported gumball dispensers.
power source. The starboard engine is for standby, get-home use. The main engine drives the boat at 7.5-8 knots at 1800 rpm while burning 6.5gph. Slowing to 1600 rpm and 6.5-7 knots reduces fuel burn to 5.5gph.
The shaft and its 44-inch, variable-pitch propeller are V-belt driven via a large bull wheel on the output side of the Twin Disc 4.5:1 reduction gear. The belts are special-
ordered in matched sets to guarantee that each is precisely the same length. The main engine drives the shaft with eight belts; the standby diesel drives via size belts. The belts last for years if properly tensioned, and those on Ocean Quest appear to be in top condition. Just in case, Bill keeps several spare sets aboard.
